Type 316 is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel containing molybdenum. This addition increases the resistance against corrosion and pitting. Type 316L is an extra-low carbon version of Type 316 that minimizes harmful carbide precipitation due to welding.

Typical uses for Type 316 Stainless Steel

Pharmaceutical equipment, photographic equipment, chemical equipment, pulp and paper equipment, textile processing equipment, furnace parts, heat exchangers, valve and pump trim, digesters, tanks, evaporators, and parts exposed to marine atmospheres.  

Typical uses for Type 316L Stainless Steel

Type 316L is used extensively for welding applications. 

Formability
Types 316 and 316L can be readily formed and drawn.

Magnetic Properties
316/316L are non-magnetic.
